A universal struggle that I think we can all relate too is our weight. It seems that either we are struggle with weight gain, or we are struggling with weight loss. Either way, it’s an uphill battle. I definitely lose this battle all the time. In fact, I’m always looking for the bench that I can sit on on the way up the hill! The best way to address this challenge is actually a challenging choice by itself: should we be dieting or should we choose healthy lifestyle overall?
Recently I’ve tried the second approach. Instead of trying lots of different diets that are fads or temporary fixes, I have tried to make changes to my lifestyle. What do I mean by that? Well, I mean making small changes that will last over the long haul. Things that will be easier to maintain than a restrictive diet.
For example, instead of trying to cut things out of my diet completely, I try to make substitutions or eat the item less often. So, I din’t cut bread out completely, but I do try to only eat wheat or whole grain. Instead of frying fish or chicken, I bake it. These are small changes that I know I can maintain. And I won’t feel like I’m missing out on my favorite foods.
It’s not easy to fight the slowing metabolism that seems inevitable as we get older, so taking the path of least resitance seems like a smart choice for me. In this episode I get a little more detailed about some of the changes I’ve tried to make to my lifestyle and why.
What do you think? Are you someone who believes diets work when followed correctly, or do you think changing your lifestyle will lead to weight loss and healthy living? Let me know in the comments section.
