Sometimes we say things that we really shouldn't. What I mean by that is, we say mean things, we make jokes about people, we talk behind their backs and we put negative messages out in the world. We do all this without realizing the impact these things will have on others. In this episode I talk about how our words have power. And that is not always a positive thing. If you are a Marvel fan like I am, then you know who Black Widow is. And you also know that for the last decade Scarlett Johansson has brought this character to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whether you enjoy her portrayal or hate it, you know that Black Widow finally got her own movie, and it was released this summer in theaters and on Disney + streaming service. One of my biggest pet peeves happens to be trends. Not one trend specifically, but in general the way trends force us all to come along for the ride. Let me explain. When a new trendy thing happens, the old thing it replaces ceases to exist. Like the new cell phones not having phone jacks. I know having Airpods and earbuds are the "thing" now. In the age of COVID-19, millions of people have barely kept their heads above water due to receiving unemployment benefits. When the government provided the supplemental benefits, it seemed like a godsend. And for most, it was. But it seems that there is an unintended negative consequence - job vacancies. Many people who can return to the workforce have not done so. And the trickle down is affecting small business owners the most. Restaurants, grocery stores, the post office, have all seen the employee pool tank. So, I've finally decided to make an episode about procrastination. In fact, I am writing this post at the very last moment possible! I am a poster child for procrastination! I think that the tendency to put things off until later is so appealing to us because we often find the tasks that need to get done boring! Or daunting! Recently, legislation has been making it's way through Congress regarding granting Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico statehood. And of course, congress seems to be divided along party lines. This isn't the first time these two territories have been considered for statehood, and to date it hasn't panned out. But it seems the political reasons for and against statehood have nothing to do with whether or not it would benefit the people. I know it's a popular concept, but making D.C. a state may not be the best idea. Our Founding Fathers purposely chose not to make it a state and we should probably consider that. There has been a lot of discussion around the recent suspension of Sha'Carri Richardson due to a positive drug test for marijuana. Many feel that it is not a harmful substance and she shouldn't be penalized. They also argue that because it was legal in her homestate, she should not be punished for it. In this episode I discuss this situation. While it is true that marijuana was legal in her state, it still is illegal Federally. And more to the point, it is on the World Anti-Doping Agency's banned list. Which makes her penalty unfortunate, but fair. Have you ever watched an operation on TV? Maybe on a TV show Like ER, or real life series like Trauma Life in the ER? I've always been drawn to these types of shows, and operations specifically. There used to be a show that actually showed the entire operation, and I couldn't get enough. In fact, I even became a surgical technologist! Recently there has been a lot of mentions about cancel culture. What is it? To me, it means the way society is ready to "cancel" or dismiss someone when their bad behavior, or negative social media postings come to light. Often that means they get fired, or lose jobs, gigs, or prominent positions. But one of the things that cancel culture is revealing is the idea that there are no second chances. It seems if we make a mistake, social media pounces and we lose everything. Now, I can't say that I am always opposed to this. A situation where people get so angry at each other over minor offenses, road rage seems to be happening more and more often. And the unintended victim is often children or innocent bystanders.
